Something new, something borrowed, something kinda’ fancy but incredibly edible.
Puff pastry makes the food world go round. I mean, the number of food recipes you can make using this incredible pastry is countless be it for a fancy recipe to a simple one. I decided to wear my fancy pants and rock on some interesting semi- sweet dessert using an apple among other ingredients. This recipe was inspired by one of TASTY puff pastry videos and we kind of share the first name, so why not.
Here is my version of a caged apple puff pastry recipe. Stay tuned.
Prep time: 5 mins Bake time: 20 mins Total time: 25 mins
Yields: 2 caged apples
Serves: 1 or 2 pax
- 1 apple
- 2 sheets of Puff Pastry
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 Tablespoon of Kentaste coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon of castor sugar
- 1 teaspoon of coarse sugar
- 1 egg = egg wash
Important tools used:
- pastry brush
- small mixing bowls
- an oven
- Shallow baking tray
Step 1: Preheat the oven to: 200 C for 10 mins first.
Step 2: Prep the apple : – Peel and cut the apple into half. Core it and set it aside.
Step 3: Prep the puff pastry: – Take out two sheets. Roll out each piece into a rectangle and cut each piece into equal parts = 4 pieces in total. Take one of the 4 pieces, and on the long side of the rectangle, make short cuts on the edges of both ends. This means the two opposite sides will not have any cuts. Let the video guide you while making the caged pattern. SEE VIDEO ABOVE. Two pieces of the puff pastry will have the cuts and other two no cuts.
Step 4: Cage the apple: – Place the non cut puff pastry pieces on a baking tray. Place each halved apple on them. Crack the egg and lightly beat it. Using a pastry brush, brush the corners of the bottom puff pastry edges. In a different small bowl, mix together the coconut oil + cinnamon + castor sugar. Brush that mixture onto the apple itself. Take the cut out caged puff pastry, slightly but gently stretch it out outwards. Place on top of the apple and firmly secure the sides. Watch the video above to guide you.
Step 5: Garnish: – Using the egg wash, brush it on top and sprinkle coarse sugar on top.
Step 6: Bake for 20 mins in a preheated oven at 200 C.
Step 7: Serve and enjoy.
