Are you a baked or a deep fried kind of person when it comes to churros?

You must be wondering what “Churros” are.

Well, Churros are a choux based snack (Pronounced as “SHUU”), that can either be deep fried or baked. All it takes is seven (7) ingredients to create the base of the choux pastry.

Choux pastry is a light dough – consisting of butter, flour, water, salt, sugar and eggs. Its’ used in making quite a number of different snacks like: eclairs, churros, profiterole and many more.

With that said and done, here’s what you’ll need in preparation to making churros.

Homemade deep fried churros with a chocolate sauce

Cook time for the choux pastry: 10 mins   Cool time for the choux pastry = 10 mins

Egg mix time:  2 mins   Deep fry time: 10 mins  Chocolate mix prep: 15 mins

Cooling the chocolate mix: 15 mins

Total time: 62 mins

Main ingredients:

Choux pastry

  • 1 cup of water
  • 180 g of chopped chocolate – dark
  • 6 Tablespoons of margarine
  • 3 eggs – at room temp
  • 1 cup – all – purpose flour
  • 2 Tablespoons of sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Cooking oil – deep frying
  • Mixing bowl

Important tools used:

  • sauce pan
  • wooden spoon / OR / heat proof spatula
  • heat – over the stove
  • Star nozzle tip
  • Piping bags
  • Butter knife

Dusting the churros:

  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon of ground cinnamon

Important tools:

  • Plate / OR /Plastic bowl

Chocolate dipping sauce

  • 2 -1/2 cups of whole milk
  • 180 g of dark semi- sweet cooking chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
  • 1 Tablespoon of ground cinnamon

Important tools used:

  • Sauce pan
  • Heat over the stove
  • Wooden spoon

Instructions:

Step 1: Making the choux pastry:– Over high heat, place your sauce pan on the stove, add water + margarine + sugar + salt. Give it a few minutes for the margarine to melt down while stirring continuously. Add in the flour, and mix it all in continuously until you get a soft dough. Let to cook as you keep stirring for at least 2 mins. Turn off the heat, transfer the soft dough into a large mixing bowl to cool completely. By smearing the dough at the sides of the bowl as you mix will help cool it down.

Step 2: Making the chocolate sauce dip: – Over another clean sauce pan, heated over medium heat, add in milk + vanilla essence + chopped up dark semi-sweet cooking chocolate. Using a wooden spoon, mix the mixture well, and make sure all the chocolate has melted. Cook the mixture for about 15 mins as you stir constantly. This will prevent any chocolate from sticking at the bottom. Once its’ ready, the consistency should be thick and still bubbly. Turn off the heat and let it just cool down.

Step 3: Adding in the eggs to the choux dough – Adding in one egg at a time and mix it well until it forms a soft dough. It will feel like the dough is broken, but keep mixing. Now repeat the steps for the 2nd and the 3rd egg until you form a soft dough. Once that is complete, you’ve officially make a CHOUX PASTRY DOUGH”.

Step 4: Placing it in a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle – Add the soft choux pastry dough into a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle. The star nozzle helps bring out the ridges that is famously known for.

Step 5: Deep frying the choux dough: – In a pre-heated oil in a large sauce pan, pipe out the dough and snip it with a butter knife and continue the same process. Let the video above guide you. Fry them until they start browning , then turn them around so they can cook on the other side as well.

Step 6: Dusting with cinnamon sugar – Add the sugar and ground cinnamon to a bowl, and mix them together. Transfer the cinnamon sugar to a wider bowl, add the churros one at a time, toss them around into the cinnamon sugar to coat them well, then set them aside.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy: – Transfer the warm chocolate dipping sauce into a bowl or serving cup and enjoy the delightful dessert.
