Japanese cooking 101 – Sushi hybrid.

Apparently, this donut sushi rice recipe is trending on instagram, and thanks to @sobeautifullyreal she came up with this brilliant dish that has got everyone talking about it. I’ve been digging through pinterest and instagram food section trying to find any simple but easy recipes to whip out for you guys this weekend but nothing to do with baking and I stumbled upon this sushi recipe and I thought I’d be damned if I didn’t get to make this my own. The thing is – I don’t like fish products, neither do I eat anything made of sea food and I tend to keep it that way. I’m just totally not a fan of anything fishy -literary.

My version comprises of everything Vegan.

Let’s make some “Donut sushi rice”

Prep time: 15 mins  Cook time: 30 mins  = 45 mins

Yields: = 6 pieces

MAIN INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup of long grain rice {OR short grain rice}
  • 1- 1/2 Tablespoon of white vinegar { OR Rice vinegar}
  • 1/8 tea spoon of salt
  • 1- 1/2 tea spoon of sugar

For the garnish:

  • Slices of avocado
  • Grated carrot
  • Sesame seeds
  • Mayonnaise

Other tools:

  • A donut pan /Mould

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Wash the rice till all the starch is off and the water is clear. Bring to a boil, two cups of water with 2 tea spoons of vegetable oil. As the rice cooks, prep the vinegar water by dissolving the sugar and salt in vinegar.

2. I got to use half of the cooked rice. Once cooked, while the rice is still hot, transfer the rice into a wooden bowl, mix the vinegar syrup with the rice and mix well till the texture gets sticky. Take your donut pan, scoop out the rice into the donut pan and press it down to have a fully body. Place in the fridge to chill for 10 mins.

3. After 10 mins of chilling, remove it from the fridge. Place a wide chopping board on top of the donut pan, then flip it upside down to allow the donut rice to fall easily off and to the board. Prep the mayo mix:place 3 tea spoons of mayonnaise into a small dish + a splash or barbecue sauce + 1/2 tea spoon of chili flakes + 1/2 tea spoon of white vinegar + a splash of tomato sauce. {Mix them all up really well} -place the mix into a squeeze bottle- shake it up- place aside.

4. Garnish the rice donut to your liking – and serve. Final outcome:
