Ever dug your teeth into one of these stuffed tortilla snacks? – tacos, wraps, quesadillas, tortilla soup, burritos, taquitos, enchiladas and tortilla chips just to mention a few or rather ever heard about these dishes? Well, the thin flat and bread-like wrap that holds everything in between is what I am going to show you how to make from scratch. It’s a very easy recipe with ingredients you already have in your pantry. Trust me you don’t want to spend a good coin of roughly Ksh 600 – $6 every time you want to make a chicken wrap, a burrito or even some tortilla soup.

Tortilla {Pronounced as TOR-TIA} is a type of thin, round Mexican bread made from maize or wheat flour.

Making “homemade Tortilla wraps”

Prep time: 10 mins  Rest time: 40 mins  Cook time: 10 mins

Total time: 1 hour

Yields: 10 pieces

MAIN INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups of plain flour
  • 3/4 cup of milk -at room temp
  • 4 teaspoons of cooking oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 -1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 cup of plain flour – extra

Important tools:

  • Rolling pin
  • wooden spoon
  • tongs
  • frying pan
  • knife
  • mixing bowl
  • measuring cup and spoons
  • kitchen towel- clean & dump
  • Aluminium foil

Instructions:

Step 1: Making the dough.

In a large bowl, mix both the dry and the wet first with a wooden spoon. Transfer the just coming together dough on to a floured clean counter top surface. Knead the tacky dough for 6 min, while avoid adding too much flour. The dough should be less tacky but not sticking to your hands.

Step 2: 1st resting = 30 mins

Place the dough into the same bowl and cover with a clean but dump kitchen towel and allow it to rest for 30 mins.

Step 3: Divide the dough

Take out the dough and shape it into a log, cut it using a knife into 10 pieces. Reshape them each piece into a ball shape and place them right into the same bowl.

Step 4: 2nd resting = 10 mins

Cover the dough with a dump towel and allow it to rest for another 10 mins.

Step 5: Rolling the divided dough

Lightly flour your surface and roll out each divided dough into a disk shape.

Step 6: Cook time – DON’T USE OIL

Using a frying pan, heated over medium high, place one rolled out dough at a time in the pan and allow it to heat up until large air bubble form and the side is cooked with little brown crust show. Turn over the other side and cook it. Both side should take about 1 min. Place the cooked tortilla covered with aluminum foil to keep it warm and soft. Repeat the steps till all are cooked. All this should take about 10 mins or more depending on how many pieces you have.

Step 7: Serve and enjoy.
