Over on my Instagram and WhatsApp stories, I asked some of your guys if you’d love for me to share three or two posts a week, and the majority preferred two posts a week. Normally, oven baked chili hot dogs are made by using ground beef as the main ingredient+ added spices and a sauce. Clearly, my take is going to be hella different and much easier as compared to so many other recipes of this kind. Remember, I had mentioned this earlier in one of my previous posts, that I am the MOTHER OF IMPROVISION, well, 89% of the time this has to happen. Some of these recipes call for improvision. I wouldn’t really discourage you to get the exact type of every ingredient in that particular recipe you are working on, but sometimes I feel it’s never that serious, to begin with. I mean, it’s food we are talking about, not a construction of a building. You and I have so much room for expression, and if food makes us do this, then why not. Risks have to be taken and nothing is cast on stone.

TIP: Always consider using what you have before going to the store and getting something new, you will basically get the same results with a slightly different texture – which is OKAY.

Shall we begin?

Making ” Oven baked Chili hot dogs“.

Prep time: 5 mins   Bake time: 25 mins    Total time: 30 mins

Serves = 3 pax

MAIN INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Cup of – “Leftover” minced sausage mix
  • 6 hot dog buns
  • 6 hot dogs
  • 1 diced tomato
  • 2 baby carrots – grated
  • 3 cloves of garlic- minced
  • 1 bunch of chopped parsley
  • sliced or grated cheddar cheese – OPTIONAL
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable cooking oil /OR/ melted better

Tools required:

  • An oven
  • a casserole dish
  • Pastry brush – /OR/ a small spoon
  • Food processor

Spices used:

  • Salt
  • Cayenne chili powder

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1:  Food processing

In your food processor, pulse the tomatoes and carrots + season with salt and chili. Immediately add the mix to the minced sausage mixture, combine everything together & set aside.

Step 2: Create a boat shape with the hot dog buns.

Preheat the oven – 180°C. Align the buns in your casserole dish. Mine could only fit 3 buns at a time. Take a small sharp knife, make a small insertion on the top part of the bun, then push the cut-out center down to make a boat shape figure.

Step 3: Prep the garlic mix

Into a small bowl with the vegetable oil, mix in the garlic & parsley. Brush that mixture to the boat-shaped buns. Bake in the oven – 5 mins.

Step 4: Assemble the meat

Once baked and slightly crisp, place the sliced cheese in the boat shape buns, place the hot dogs and over the top, add the spicy minced sausage {which was leftover from the dumplings’ recipe post see here}. You can decide to top it up with more cheese either sliced or grated -Your choice.

Step 5: Bake in the oven for 20 mins. Allow it to cool for 10 mins before serving.

Now, this is a different definition of a chili hot dog. From the crunch of the bun, to the moist and gooeyness of the minced sausage mix – Uuuuuuh!! LORD take me back to 2 days ago.
