When it comes to food nobody does it like the French. We’ve all at one time borrowed their original recipes and recreated to suite our own needs and wants, and that’s not such a bad thing. I do it all the time. The tomato tart is the perfect place to start if you’re interested in sampling that rustic French life.

One of the many vegetables that never miss at the grocery store is tomatoes. It feels like its tomato season every day. I can never be mad about that since they are easily accessible and probably affordable.

A tomato tart is basically a french dish with a crusty puff pastry base topped up with juicy tomatoes with or and a variety of different toppings of your choice.

Today we are tackling the most basic tomato tart recipe using store bought puff pastry for the crust.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Prep time: 5 mins   Bake time: 35 mins   Total time: 40 mins

Yields: 2 tomato tarts

Serves: 2 pax

Main Ingredients:

  • 2 sheets of puff pastry
  • 4 medium sized tomatoes
  • 2 Tablespoons of BBQ sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons of garlic tomato sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon of Flour for dusting
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cumin
  • 1/4 tsp of black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ginger powder
  • Vegetable cooking oil

Important tools used:

  • Baking tray
  • fork
  • rolling pin
  • rolling board
  • knife
  • chopping board
  • an oven
  • spoon

Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 200 C for 15 mins first.

Step 2: Prep the puff pastry:– Lightly roll out each PP, by dusting off flour on each side since it can get quite sticky in the process. Transfer the two pieces of PP {Rolled out Puff Pastry} on to a baking tray. Fold the edges inwards and press them lightly with your fingers to form a barrier as they bake in then.Take a fork and make “fork marks” to fasten the edges well.

Step 3: Making a sauce mix: out of the BBQ + tomato sauce. Apply the sauce at the inner part of the PP”.

Step 4: Slice the tomatoes: – align the sliced tomatoes onto the sauced up sauce mix. In a small bowl, mix all the spices together. Season the tomatoes. Generously drizzle some vegetable cooking oil on top.

Step 5: Bake in the preheated oven at 200 C for 35 mins.

Step 6: Serve and enjoy while still hot.
